Are Purple Hybrids Good for You?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It offers three hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 (Purple Hybrid Premier 3), and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 (Purple Hybrid Premier 4). The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! How Much Does Purple Mattress Cost
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Couples might not like the Purple mattresses.
You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. How Much Does Purple Mattress Cost
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Next, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
Purple Hybrids are ranked on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. This mattress is quite firm. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It provides pressure relief and support which can be adjusted to suit any sleeping position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. But, I still didn’t feel “stuck-in” the bed. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before I wrap up this section, I wanted to mention that all three Purple Hybrids had a responsive, bouncy feel. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. How Much Does Purple Mattress Cost
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 should be suitable for light-weight back sleepers. It will fill in the lumbar region for good pressure relief. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is the ideal choice for these types of sleepers. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. How Much Does Purple Mattress Cost
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is a nice fit for these sleepers, since it combines the pressure relief and support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Average Weight Side Sleepers ” The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. How Much Does Purple Mattress Cost
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. How Much Does Purple Mattress Cost
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. I use a pressure map to check for this.
Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. As I move around the bed, the gadget records the force my body’s exerting on the map, and makes a colored “map” of the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain Based upon these results, all three beds are great choices for those suffering from shoulder pain. To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. How Much Does Purple Mattress Cost
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples like beds that do not transmit motion, are comfortable for sex, and have excellent edge support. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. This shows me that you are likely to feel movement on all three of these mattresses. This could make them less suitable for couples, especially if one is easily disturbed at night. How Much Does Purple Mattress Cost
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. How Much Does Purple Mattress Cost
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. How Much Does Purple Mattress Cost
What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
The Purple Grid.
Next is a layer of transition foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs are extremely bouncy, so help to further lift the sleeper up and out of the structure. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. The original Purple Hybrid isn’t as hard to lift, but I’d still recommend having a friend nearby to help you unbag it. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. Any scent should fade within a few days.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. Now it’s time to make a decision about whether one of these mattresses is the right choice for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. Combination sleepers will have no trouble changing their positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. How Much Does Purple Mattress Cost
My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. To increase the life expectancy of your Purple bed, make sure it is placed on a stable platform and not a box spring. Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids combine foam layers with pocketed coils to give you a double punch of support and pressure relief, just like the Purple Hybrids.
It does however have a more traditional feel to it than any Purple beds. So, this could work for those who aren’t keen on Purple’s unique feel.
I would recommend the Leesa Hybrid for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper has zoned support. It’s more firm at the hips than the Purples. The shoulders are softer to provide optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
