Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The Premier 3 Hybrid uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches.
Although the pressure relief offered by these beds is different, they feel almost identical. Let’s take a closer look at each model to see if it might be the right one for you.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.
These beds will appeal to combination sleepers. Is Purple Mattress Safe
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses are not for everyone.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Is Purple Mattress Safe
How Firm are Purple Hybrid mattresses?
Next up, let’s get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.
Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress will be more supportive than the industry standard of 6.5, which is for medium firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid should be used by back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. This bed is recommended for combination sleepers who need to move around in the night. It also suits those who suffer from lower back pain and are looking for a mattress that can help with sciatica. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel comfortable to combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. But, I still didn’t feel “stuck-in” the bed. I’d recommend this mattress to side sleepers or side combination sleepers. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. Is Purple Mattress Safe
Are Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Pounds)?
Light Back Sleepers ” I believe the Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for light back sleepers. It should fill in their lumbar areas for pressure relief and also provides plenty of support for those who are lighter. For these sleepers, any one of the hybrids may also be suitable.
Light Side Sleepers ” The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers- These people should stick with the original Purple Hybrid. It will keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Is Purple Mattress Safe
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its thick, top layer of hyper elastic polymer gives you plenty of pressure relief at your hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Is Purple Mattress Safe
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers–I recommend these sleepers stick the Premier 3 because it is thick enough to last but not soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers ” The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. This mattress is our top choice for heavy sleepers. Is Purple Mattress Safe
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. To check this, I use a Pressure Map.
Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. Although the map is blue all over, it doesn’t have a gap at the lower back like Premier 3 and 4 maps. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain is The Premier 4 for people with hip pain. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. Is Purple Mattress Safe
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. Check out the Purple Hybrids to find out how they stack up in these areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is an important consideration for anyone who sleeps with a child or furry companion, but more so for couples.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. This means that you will feel movement throughout the three mattresses. Is Purple Mattress Safe
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
The Purple Hybrids all have incredible cooling properties.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Is Purple Mattress Safe
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Edge support can make your mattress seem larger, as you can spread across its entire surface.
I thought all three Purple mattresses had good edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Is Purple Mattress Safe
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This purple top layer is what gives Purple mattresses their unique look.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is very cooling and supportive. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This transition foam is used to help the sleeper get through the soft top grid, and on to the stronger pocketed coils system below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs have a high bounce and lift the body. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.

Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses. Any scent should vanish within a few hours.
Let me conclude my review on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. While I cannot make this decision for you personally, I can give you some final thoughts that will help you to make the right choice.
Purple Hybrid is one of my favorite mattresses
The Purple Hybrids are extremely cooling. These beds don’t trap any body heat so they should make most hot sleepers very happy. I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. These beds will be easy to adjust for combination sleepers.
Finally, I really like the feel of the Purple Grid. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. Is Purple Mattress Safe
My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
I do also want to note that a few customers have complained about the original Purple mattress sagging and forming indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. For a longer life, make sure you put the Purple bed on a solid platform. Is Purple Mattress Safe

Purple mattresses made in America.

They recommend using a platform base, adjustable base or slatted beds frames.
Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s now take a deep dive into the Purple Hybrid Premier, and see how they compare with other mattresses you can find on the Internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.
Purples are more bouncier than Casper Hybrids, which combination sleepers may appreciate.
The Purple 3 or Purple 4 can be a bit more effective than the Casper Hybrid. Is Purple Mattress Safe
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, firm, and buoyant. This is a great feeling for combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress can be used in conjunction with the Purple Hybrids to cool down.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
