This review will focus on the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. Purple.2 Mattress
I did a detailed review of these mattresses to find out how they were built and feel.
Purple Hybrid Mattress Video Review
Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid has 2 inches, the Premier 3 3 inches and the Premier 4 4 inches. 4 inches
These beds provide different levels of pressure relief but feel very similar. Look below to find out which model is the best.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.
These beds will appeal to combination sleepers. Purple.2 Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not appeal to couples.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Purple.2 Mattress
What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. This bed is recommended for combination sleepers who need to move around in the night. It also suits those who suffer from lower back pain and are looking for a mattress that can help with sciatica. It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier4: This bed scored a 6/10 on the mattress firmness scale. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. These are, in fact, some of the most comfortable mattresses available for combination sleepers. Purple.2 Mattress
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 should be suitable for light-weight back sleepers. It will fill in the lumbar region for good pressure relief. Either of the other hybrids could also work for these sleepers.
The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers: I recommend that these people stick with the original Purple Hybrid. This should ensure their hips are aligned with their shoulders. Purple.2 Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Purple.2 Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Purple.2 Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related. This is how well a particular bed can reduce tension at the hips, shoulders, lower back, and hips. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. The gadget records the force of my body on the map and gives me a colored “map”. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.
Pressure relief is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. Although the map is blue all over, it doesn’t have a gap at the lower back like Premier 3 and 4 maps. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.
Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. Purple.2 Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples like beds that do not transmit motion, are comfortable for sex, and have excellent edge support. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. This means that you will feel movement throughout the three mattresses. Purple.2 Mattress
The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.
Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
The Purple Hybrids all have incredible cooling properties.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.
This is great news, especially for couples that tend to overheat faster than solo sleepers. Purple.2 Mattress
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
I thought all three Purple mattresses had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Purple.2 Mattress
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is very cooling and supportive. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It is great at helping you to achieve healthy spinal alignment and it also provides incredible pressure relief. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. The Purple is a great choice if you want to try a different feel. Purple.2 Mattress
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. While it isn’t a major problem, it might make you feel more awake at night.
A few customers complained that the Purple mattress was sagging and creating indentations. Purple Hybrids will last longer due to the layers of innerspring coils. But heavier people may want to choose a different mattress. For a longer life, make sure you put the Purple bed on a solid platform. Purple.2 Mattress

Purple Hybrid Vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
The Leesa Hybrid is a good choice for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more bouncier than Casper Hybrids, which combination sleepers may appreciate.
The Purple 3 or Purple 4 can be a bit more effective than the Casper Hybrid. Purple.2 Mattress
Purple Hybrids Vs. Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress supports are made of high density poly foam, not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, firm, and buoyant. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
