In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. To find out, I gave these mattresses a thorough review, assessing how they’re built, how they feel, and how well they support certain sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
This mattress is cooling and should be loved by hot sleepers.
These beds will appeal to combination sleepers. Purple Gel Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Purple Gel Mattress
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid – I found this mattress to have a very firm feel, so I gave it 7/10 on the mattress firmness rating. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Purple Hybrid should be used by back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. This bed is recommended for combination sleepers who need to move around in the night. It also suits those who suffer from lower back pain and are looking for a mattress that can help with sciatica. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 can be used to combine sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. I believe these people will love the pressure-relieving comfort of this mattress.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Gel Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers ” I believe the Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for light back sleepers. It should fill in their lumbar areas for pressure relief and also provides plenty of support for those who are lighter. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. Purple Gel Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for average-weight sleepers (130 ” 250 lb), or are they not?
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers ” The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. Its thick, top layer of hyper elastic polymer gives you plenty of pressure relief at your hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Purple Gel Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers ” I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers ” I wouldn’t recommend these beds for heavy stomach sleepers. They will need a firmer, more supportive mattress. A better choice for heavy people is one of our top mattresses. Purple Gel Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
It sounds complicated but it’s really quite easy. All I have to do is roll the gadget out and get on board. The map does the rest. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
The Purple Hybrids offer pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Purple Gel Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples like beds that do not transmit motion, are comfortable for sex, and have excellent edge support. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.
Motion transfer describes the movement from one side or the other of the bed. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. This means that you will feel movement throughout the three mattresses. Purple Gel Mattress
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.
This is good news for couples who tend to heat up much faster than single sleepers. Purple Gel Mattress
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.
I personally thought that the Purple Premier 3 provided the best edge support. Purple Gel Mattress
What are Purple Hybrids Made from?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! I know most people want to know more information about the Purple Grid layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below I’ll detail the grid as well as all of the mattress layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This transition foam works to ease the sleeper down through the soft top grid and onto the sturdier pocketed coil system below.
Support Layer: The bulk of Hybrid Premier or Hybrid Premier mattresses consists of a section made of pocketed coils. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. As the bed’s polymer grid and pocketsed coils create buoyancy, you will likely feel more “ontop” of them.
Take a look at what materials are used in the layers for the Purple Hybrid. Purple Gel Mattress
Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
The Final Thoughts on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. We’re now at the end. Now it’s time to make a decision about whether one of these mattresses is the right choice for you. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
Purple Hybrid mattress are my favorite.
I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. They don’t trap too much heat, so most people who are hot should feel comfortable on them. I love the responsiveness of Purple Hybrids. Combination sleepers will have no trouble changing their positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. If you’re willing to test out a more unique feel I think the Purple might be a great fit for you. Purple Gel Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids should be more durable because of the innerspring coil layers. Heavy people might consider a different type of mattress if this is an issue. For a longer life, make sure you put the Purple bed on a solid platform. Purple Gel Mattress

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids combine foam layers with pocketed coils to give you a double punch of support and pressure relief, just like the Purple Hybrids.
Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.
In general, I’d recommend the Leesa Hybrid for back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Gel Mattress
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.
The Original Purple mattress, like the Purple Hybrids is extremely cooling. It could also be a good choice for people who sleep hot at night.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
