In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. While the specs are interesting, these beds do not sound comfortable. These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who desire a firmer feel for their backs should choose the original Purple Hybrid. Those who want more pressure relief might prefer to use the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers might like the Purple Premier 4 which provides great cushioning around sensitive pressure point.
People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.
Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! Purple Mattress For Back Pain
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress For Back Pain
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Next up, let’s get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really supported my pressure points and allowed for a lot of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we wrap up, I would like to highlight the responsiveness and bounce of all three Purple Hybrids. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Purple Mattress For Back Pain
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is the ideal choice for these types of sleepers. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers: I recommend that these people stick with the original Purple Hybrid. This should ensure their hips are aligned with their shoulders. Purple Mattress For Back Pain
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is a nice fit for these sleepers, since it combines the pressure relief and support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.
Side sleepers of average weight – The Premier 4 is the best choice for these sleepers. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers-The original Purple Hybrid should provide enough support to keep their spines straight. Purple Mattress For Back Pain
Are Purple Hybrids a good mattress for heavy sleepers (over 250 lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Purple Mattress For Back Pain
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related. This is how well a particular bed can reduce tension at the hips, shoulders, lower back, and hips. To check this, I use a Pressure Map.
It sounds complicated but it’s really quite easy. All I have to do is roll the gadget out and get on board. The map does the rest. The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids offer pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! These beds should be able to cushion the shoulders and relieve pressure.
Hip Pain is The Premier 4 for people with hip pain. Its pressure map is nearly completely blue, which means that sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout night. Purple Mattress For Back Pain
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important consideration for anyone who sleeps with a child or furry companion, but more so for couples.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress For Back Pain
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.
Their mobility and lift could make them a great choice for you if your sleep is disturbed at night.
The Purple Hybrids all have incredible cooling properties.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress For Back Pain
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. A mattress with great edge support will feel larger because you can spread it across its entire surface.
I thought all three Purple mattresses had good edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought that the Purple Premier 3 had some of the best edge support. Purple Mattress For Back Pain
What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This grid is the stretchy, purple top layer that gives the Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. All Purple Hybrids are made the same. Only the length of each Purple Grid used by each bed is different.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is supportive, bouncy and extremely cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.
The Purple Grid.
Next is a layer of transition foam. This transition foam works to ease the sleeper down through the soft top grid and onto the sturdier pocketed coil system below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs have a high bounce and lift the body. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. Purple includes complimentary white glove delivery when you order the Hybrid Premier models. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. Now it’s time to make a decision about whether one of these mattresses is the right choice for you. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. The thicker models are the best, especially when they are heavier. If you are willing to experiment with a more unique feel, I recommend the Purple. Purple Mattress For Back Pain
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses may not offer the best motion isolation. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids will last longer due to the layers of innerspring coils. But heavier people may want to choose a different mattress. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. Purple Mattress For Back Pain

These mattresses are identical except for the amount of Purple Grid used.

Purple mattresses are all made in the USA.

Purple Hybrid vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids combine foam layers with pocketed coils to give you a double punch of support and pressure relief, just like the Purple Hybrids.
Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper’s zoned support is unlike the Purples. It is firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders, providing optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 are a bit more pressure-relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress For Back Pain
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress supports are made of high density poly foam, not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.
The Original Purple Mattress is very cool, just like the Purple Hybrids.
The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
