We’ll be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier, and Purple Hybrid Premier beds. These beds feature the Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid as well as layers of springy pockets and coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. Purple Mattress King
To find out, I gave these mattresses a thorough review, assessing how they’re built, how they feel, and how well they support certain sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches
As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. Let’s take a closer look at each model to see if it might be the right one for you.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The Purple Hybrid original is ideal for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. Purple Premier 3 might be more suitable for those who require a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! Purple Mattress King
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Purple Mattress King
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. Referring to my height, I am 5’9″ and 125 lbs. I prefer to sleep on my side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress really supported my pressure points and allowed for a lot of sinkage. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before I wrap up this section, I wanted to mention that all three Purple Hybrids had a responsive, bouncy feel. These beds feel much more comfortable than they are “in” and I found it easy to adjust my position at night. These are my top picks for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress King
Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers- These people should stick with the original Purple Hybrid. It will keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress King
Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is a nice fit for these sleepers, since it combines the pressure relief and support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Side sleepers of average weight – The Premier 4 is the best choice for these sleepers. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Purple Mattress King
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. Its thick grid layer provides plenty of space for sinkage, and its soft feel should be comfortable for these folks.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. The best mattress for heavy people might be one of our best. Purple Mattress King
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. I use a pressure chart to verify this.
Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! These beds should be able to cushion the shoulders and relieve pressure.
Hip Pain is The Premier 4 for people with hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Purple Mattress King
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. Check out the Purple Hybrids to find out how they stack up in these areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. This means that you will feel movement throughout the three mattresses. Purple Mattress King
The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
The Purple Hybrids all have incredible cooling properties.
Any of these beds is suitable for hot sleepers. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress King
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer compress under my weight, but the foam and coils below stayed firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Purple Mattress King
What are Purple Hybrids Made from?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This purple top layer is what gives Purple mattresses their unique look.
Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. There is only one difference: how many inches of Purple Grid each mattress uses.
Cover All these mattresses come with a waterproof and stretchy polyester-blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is supportive, bouncy and extremely cooling. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs are extremely bouncy, so help to further lift the sleeper up and out of the structure. As the bed’s polymer grid and pocketsed coils create buoyancy, you will likely feel more “ontop” of them.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. Purple Mattress King
Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. The original Purple Hybrid isn’t as hard to lift, but I’d still recommend having a friend nearby to help you unbag it. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
Let me conclude my review on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
Purple Hybrid is one of my favorite mattresses
The Purple Hybrids are extremely cooling. They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. The Purple Grid is great for helping you maintain a healthy spine alignment. It also feels amazing in relieving pressure. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. If you are willing to experiment with a more unique feel, I recommend the Purple. Purple Mattress King
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
A few customers complained that the Purple mattress was sagging and creating indentations. Purple Hybrids will last longer due to the layers of innerspring coils. But heavier people may want to choose a different mattress. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. Purple Mattress King

Purple does not recommend the use of a boxspring in any of their beds.
They recommend using a platform base, adjustable base or slatted beds frames.
Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 are a bit more pressure-relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress King
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress can be used in conjunction with the Purple Hybrids to cool down.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
