This review will focus on the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Purple Mattress Pads
To find out, these mattresses received a thorough review. I evaluated how they were constructed, how they feel and how they support specific sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
These beds provide different levels of pressure relief but feel very similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Premier 4, as it offers great cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.
These beds will appeal to combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Pads
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Couples might not like the Purple mattresses.
They are so lively, it is likely that you will feel your partner turning and tossing at night.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Pads
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.
Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.
Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress will be more supportive than the industry standard of 6.5, which is for medium firmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4 – I scored this bed at 6 out 10 on the mattress firmness rating scale. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. Side sleepers and side-combined sleepers would love this mattress. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Pads
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers ” The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers- These people should stick with the original Purple Hybrid. It will keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Pads
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for average-weight sleepers (130 ” 250 lb), or are they not?
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is a nice fit for these sleepers, since it combines the pressure relief and support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.
Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Purple Mattress Pads
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers–I recommend these sleepers stick the Premier 3 because it is thick enough to last but not soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend any of these beds to heavy stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to provide optimal support. The best mattress for heavy people might be one of our best. Purple Mattress Pads
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed is able to alleviate tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! As I move around the bed, the gadget records the force my body’s exerting on the map, and makes a colored “map” of the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. Its pressure map is nearly completely blue, which means that sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout night. Purple Mattress Pads
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Pads
The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Pads
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Purple Mattress Pads
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. The only difference between the Purple Grids used in each bed is the number of inches.
Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Directly below the cover is where you’ll encounter the hyper-elastic polymer smart comfort grid. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. It is difficult to describe how this polymer material feels. However, I would compare it to a waterbed because it wraps around your body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
A look at The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This transition foam allows the sleeper to slide through the soft top grid onto the more solid pocketed coil system.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs have a high bounce and lift the body. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
The Purple Hybrids are so cool! They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. If you’re willing to test out a more unique feel I think the Purple might be a great fit for you. Purple Mattress Pads
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
I do also want to note that a few customers have complained about the original Purple mattress sagging and forming indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. To increase the life expectancy of your Purple bed, make sure it is placed on a stable platform and not a box spring. Purple Mattress Pads

Purple Hybrids Vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids are similar to the Purple Hybrids. It combines foam layers, pocketed coils and support for one-two pressure relief.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.
Purples can be more bouncy than the Casper Hybrids, which may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 (and Purple 4) are slightly more pressure relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Pads
Purple Hybrids and Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer is made of high-density poly foam instead of pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
The Original Purple mattress can be used in conjunction with the Purple Hybrids to cool down.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
