We’ll be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier, and Purple Hybrid Premier beds. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. Purple Mattress Sag
These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Mattress Video Review
Is a Purple Hybrid Mattress a Good Choice?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It offers three hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 (Purple Hybrid Premier 3), and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 (Purple Hybrid Premier 4). Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches.
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
These mattresses should be appreciated by hot sleepers.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Purple Mattress Sag
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Purple Mattress Sag
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. Referring to the above, I am approximately 5’9″ and weigh 125 lbs.
As you can see, all three of my mattresses felt very different to me.
Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.
Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. As the polymer layer on this mattress is thin enough to support a smooth spine, I believe stomach and back sleeping would be most benefited.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really supported my pressure points and allowed for a lot of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. Side sleepers and side-combined sleepers would love this mattress. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Sag
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Light Sleepers (under 130lb)?
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. Either of the other hybrids could also work for these sleepers.
Light Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is the ideal choice for these types of sleepers. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers- These people should stick with the original Purple Hybrid. It will keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Sag
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. You can move from one position to another at night, making it a good choice.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach – The original Purple Hybrid should have enough support to keep these people’s spines straight. Purple Mattress Sag
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. Its thick grid layer provides plenty of space for sinkage, and its soft feel should be comfortable for these folks.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend any of these beds to heavy stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to provide optimal support. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Purple Mattress Sag
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. To check this, I use a Pressure Map.
Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This indicates that the original Hybrid is maintaining my weight evenly supported. This is important in order to avoid back pain.
Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! These beds should be able to cushion the shoulders and relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. Purple Mattress Sag
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids motion transfer results.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Sag
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Sag
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. A mattress with great edge support will feel larger because you can spread it across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Purple Mattress Sag
What are Purple Hybrids Made from?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.
A look at The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. Purple Mattress Sag
Purple Hybrids Unboxing And Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids are all-bed-in-a box mattresses. However, they come in bags rather than boxes. Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses. The scent should disappear within a few hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid mattress are my favorite.
I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. Combination sleepers will have no trouble changing their positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. Purple Mattress Sag
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. While it isn’t a major problem, it might make you feel more awake at night.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Sag

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
But it is more traditional than any Purple bed, so it could work for those who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
The Leesa Hybrid is a good choice for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper has zoned support. It’s more firm at the hips than the Purples. The shoulders are softer to provide optimal lumbar support.
Purples can be more bouncy than the Casper Hybrids, which may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Sag
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.
The Original Purple mattress, like the Purple Hybrids is extremely cooling. It could also be a good choice for people who sleep hot at night.
The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
