This review will focus on the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. I’ll admit, the specs certainly sound interesting, but are these beds comfortable? To find out, these mattresses received a thorough review. I evaluated how they were constructed, how they feel and how they support specific sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It offers three hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 (Purple Hybrid Premier 3), and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 (Purple Hybrid Premier 4). The only difference between these beds is how much of Purple’s special grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches
These beds provide different levels of pressure relief but feel very similar. Let’s take a closer look at each model to see if it might be the right one for you.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
Combination sleepers will love the bounce of these beds! Purple Mattress Sues
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
They are so lively, it is likely that you will feel your partner turning and tossing at night.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Sues
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids are ranked on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress truly supported my pressure points, and gave me a great amount of sinkage. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. I think these folks will really appreciate the pressure-relieving feel of this mattress.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Sues
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 should be suitable for light-weight back sleepers. It will fill in the lumbar region for good pressure relief. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. Side sleepers will love the fact that it provides pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers: I recommend that these people stick with the original Purple Hybrid. This should ensure their hips are aligned with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Sues
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers ” The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. It is ideal for people who move between sleeping positions at night.
Side sleepers of average weight – The Premier 4 is the best choice for these sleepers. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. Purple Mattress Sues
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers ” I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. A better choice for heavy people is one of our top mattresses. Purple Mattress Sues
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. I use a pressure map to check for this.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. Purple Mattress Sues
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. Purple Mattress Sues
The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.
Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Sues
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. A mattress with great edge support will feel larger because you can spread it across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought that the Purple Premier 3 had some of the best edge support. Purple Mattress Sues
What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. The Purple Hybrids all have the same construction. The only difference between the Purple Grids used in each bed is the number of inches.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer Directly below the cover is where you’ll encounter the hyper-elastic polymer smart comfort grid. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This transition foam works to ease the sleeper down through the soft top grid and onto the sturdier pocketed coil system below.
Support Layer: The bulk of Hybrid Premier or Hybrid Premier mattresses consists of a section made of pocketed coils. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.
The Purple Hybrid is made up of layers of different materials. Purple Mattress Sues
Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
The Purple Hybrids are all bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they actually come in bags instead of boxes! Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. A perk of these mattresses is that they do not have a very strong off-gassing scent when compared to other bed-in-a-box models. Any scent should fade within a few days.
Let me conclude my review on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
The Purple Hybrids are so cool! They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. I love the responsiveness of Purple Hybrids. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
Finally, I really like the feel of the Purple Grid. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. The Purple is a great choice if you want to try a different feel. Purple Mattress Sues
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
I do also want to note that a few customers have complained about the original Purple mattress sagging and forming indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Sues

Purple Hybrid vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids combine foam layers with pocketed coils to give you a double punch of support and pressure relief, just like the Purple Hybrids.
It does however have a more traditional feel to it than any Purple beds. So, this could work for those who aren’t keen on Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper has zoned support. It’s more firm at the hips than the Purples. The shoulders are softer to provide optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Sues
Purple Hybrids Vs. Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. This is a great feeling for combination sleepers.
The Original Purple Mattress is very cool, just like the Purple Hybrids.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
