In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds include the company’s famous Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid and springy layers of pocketsed coils. I’ll admit, the specs certainly sound interesting, but are these beds comfortable? To find out, I gave these mattresses a thorough review, assessing how they’re built, how they feel, and how well they support certain sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It currently sells three kinds of hybrid mattresses: Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 & Purple Hybrid Premier 4 Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! Purple Mattress Toxicology Report
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Purple Mattress Toxicology Report
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below I’ll share what it was like to lie down on any of the Purple Hybrid mattresses. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you will see in the graphic, I found that each mattress had its own feel.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid – I found this mattress to have a very firm feel, so I gave it 7/10 on the mattress firmness rating. It’s obvious that this mattress is more supportive than the industry-standard 6.5 for mediumfirmness. This mattress is best for stomach and back sleepers, since the polymer layer of the polymer is thin enough that it can support a straight spine from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 can be used to combine sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. I think these folks will really appreciate the pressure-relieving feel of this mattress.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Purple Mattress Toxicology Report
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Light Sleepers (under 130lb)?
Light Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 should be suitable for light-weight back sleepers. It will fill in the lumbar region for good pressure relief. You could also try one of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Toxicology Report
Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back Sleepers ” The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Purple Mattress Toxicology Report
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers–I recommend these sleepers stick the Premier 3 because it is thick enough to last but not soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers — The Premier 4 can be a great option for heavy side sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Purple Mattress Toxicology Report
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain Based upon these results, all three beds are great choices for those suffering from shoulder pain. To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain is The Premier 4 for people with hip pain. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. Purple Mattress Toxicology Report
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids motion transfer results.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Toxicology Report
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
The Purple Hybrids seem a bit too soft to be shared if you aren’t a light sleeper.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Toxicology Report
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Edge support can make your mattress seem larger, as you can spread across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought that the Purple Premier 3 had some of the best edge support. Purple Mattress Toxicology Report
What are Purple Hybrids Made From?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference between the Purple Grids used in each bed is the number of inches.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is very cooling and supportive. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. While the original Purple Hybrid is not as difficult to lift, it’s still worth having someone nearby to help you bag it. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. Any scent should vanish within a few hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. Now, you can decide if one or more of these mattresses are the right fit for you. While I cannot make this decision for you personally, I can give you some final thoughts that will help you to make the right choice.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
Purple mattresses may not offer the best motion isolation. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
However, I would like to point out that some customers were unhappy with the original Purple mattress’s tendency of sagging or forming indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. The only difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple Grid each is made with.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 is 2-inch thick, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 is 3-inch, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4 is 4-inch.
Where are Purple mattresses made in the USA?
Purple mattresses are all made in the USA.

Purple doesn’t recommend that you use a box spring in conjunction with any of your beds.
They recommend using a platform base, adjustable base or slatted beds frames.
Purple Hybrid Vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 or Purple 4 can be a bit more effective than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Toxicology Report
Purple Hybrids Vs. Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress supports are made of high density poly foam, not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. This is a great feeling for combination sleepers.
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.
The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
