Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. Look below to find out which model is the best.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Premier 4, as it offers great cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will likely enjoy the supportive feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! Purple Mattress Video Sasquatch
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not appeal to couples.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Purple Mattress Video Sasquatch
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. This mattress is best for stomach and back sleepers, since the polymer layer of the polymer is thin enough that it can support a straight spine from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel comfortable to combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier4: This bed scored a 6/10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. Side sleepers and side-combined sleepers would love this mattress. I think these folks will really appreciate the pressure-relieving feel of this mattress.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap up, I would like to highlight the responsiveness and bounce of all three Purple Hybrids. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Video Sasquatch
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers ” The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.
Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. Purple Mattress Video Sasquatch
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Average Weight Side Sleepers ” The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. Its thick top layer of hyper-elastic polymer provides plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Purple Mattress Video Sasquatch
Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers–I recommend these sleepers stick the Premier 3 because it is thick enough to last but not soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. A better choice for heavy people is one of our top mattresses. Purple Mattress Video Sasquatch
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
It sounds complicated but it’s really quite easy. All I have to do is roll the gadget out and get on board. The map does the rest. The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
The Purple Hybrids offer pressure relief.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Purple Mattress Video Sasquatch
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be detected from one side of a bed to the next. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
To illustrate motion transfer I dropped a 10lb steel ball from heights 4-8, 8 and 12 inches. The disturbance it created was measured.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. Purple Mattress Video Sasquatch
The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
However, if you’re not disturbed at night they can be good options for sex due to their lift-and mobility.
All Purple Hybrids offer incredible cooling.
Any of these beds is suitable for hot sleepers. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Purple Mattress Video Sasquatch
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Purple Mattress Video Sasquatch
What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This purple top layer is what gives Purple mattresses their unique look.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is supportive, bouncy and extremely cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.
The Purple Grid.
The Transition Layer You’ll next find a layer made of poly foam. This transition foam is used to help the sleeper get through the soft top grid, and on to the stronger pocketed coils system below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.

Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
The Purple Hybrids are all bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they actually come in bags instead of boxes! The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
I really love how cooling all of the Purple Hybrids are. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. These beds will be easy to adjust for combination sleepers.
Finally, I really like the feel of the Purple Grid. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. It is especially effective when you opt for one of the thicker models. The Purple is a great choice if you want to try a different feel. Purple Mattress Video Sasquatch
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids should be more durable because of the innerspring coil layers. Heavy people might consider a different type of mattress if this is an issue. To increase the life expectancy of your Purple bed, make sure it is placed on a stable platform and not a box spring. Purple Hybrid Vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids are similar to the Purple Hybrids. It combines foam layers, pocketed coils and support for one-two pressure relief.
However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
In general, I’d recommend the Leesa Hybrid for back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.
Purples can be more bouncy than the Casper Hybrids, which may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 are a bit more pressure-relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Video Sasquatch
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is firm, supportive, and bouncy. Combination sleepers may particularly enjoy this feeling.
The Original Purple mattress, like the Purple Hybrids is extremely cooling. It could also be a good choice for people who sleep hot at night.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
