We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. Although the specifications sound interesting, I have to admit that these beds are not comfortable. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
To find out, these mattresses received a thorough review. I evaluated how they were constructed, how they feel and how they support specific sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid Mattress a Good Choice?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches
These beds provide different levels of pressure relief but feel very similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
This mattress is cooling and should be loved by hot sleepers.
These beds will appeal to combination sleepers. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. Referring to the above, I am approximately 5’9″ and weigh 125 lbs.
As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. I think these folks will really appreciate the pressure-relieving feel of this mattress.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. These beds feel much more comfortable than they are “in” and I found it easy to adjust my position at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 should be suitable for light-weight back sleepers. It will fill in the lumbar region for good pressure relief. They could also use any of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach Sleepers- These people should stick with the original Purple Hybrid. It will keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. You can move from one position to another at night, making it a good choice.
Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its thick, top layer of hyper elastic polymer gives you plenty of pressure relief at your hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers-The original Purple Hybrid should provide enough support to keep their spines straight. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers ” I wouldn’t recommend these beds for heavy stomach sleepers. They will need a firmer, more supportive mattress. A better choice for heavy people is one of our top mattresses. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. To check this, I use a Pressure Map.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. Although the map is blue all over, it doesn’t have a gap at the lower back like Premier 3 and 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought that the Purple Premier 3 had some of the best edge support. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! I know most people want to know more information about the Purple Grid layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. All Purple Hybrids are made the same. The only difference between the Purple Grids used in each bed is the number of inches.
Cover All these mattresses come with a waterproof and stretchy polyester-blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.
The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This transition foam works to ease the sleeper down through the soft top grid and onto the sturdier pocketed coil system below.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs have a high bounce and lift the body. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. While I cannot make this decision for you personally, I can give you some final thoughts that will help you to make the right choice.
Purple Hybrid is one of my favorite mattresses
I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. These beds don’t trap any body heat so they should make most hot sleepers very happy. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses may not offer the best motion isolation. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam

They recommend using a platform base, adjustable base or slatted beds frames.
Purple Hybrid vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more bouncier than Casper Hybrids, which combination sleepers may appreciate.
The Purple 3 or Purple 4 can be a bit more effective than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Mattress Vs Memory Foam
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
