We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Purple Rv Mattress
To find out, I reviewed these mattresses in depth. I assessed their build quality, comfort, and support for certain types of sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It offers three hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 (Purple Hybrid Premier 3), and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 (Purple Hybrid Premier 4). There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will likely enjoy the supportive feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
These mattresses should be appreciated by hot sleepers.
These beds will appeal to combination sleepers. Purple Rv Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not appeal to couples.
Their buoyancy makes it easy to imagine your partner tossing about at night.
If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Purple Rv Mattress
What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier4: This bed scored a 6/10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really supported my pressure points and allowed for a lot of sinkage. But, I still didn’t feel “stuck-in” the bed. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. These are, in fact, some of the most comfortable mattresses available for combination sleepers. Purple Rv Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Pounds)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. Either of the other hybrids could also work for these sleepers.
The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers: I recommend that these people stick with the original Purple Hybrid. This should ensure their hips are aligned with their shoulders. Purple Rv Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. You can move from one position to another at night, making it a good choice.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Purple Rv Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers ” I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. A better choice for heavy people is one of our top mattresses. Purple Rv Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed is able to alleviate tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. I use a pressure map to check for this.
It sounds complicated but it’s really quite easy. All I have to do is roll the gadget out and get on board. The map does the rest. As I move around the bed, the gadget records the force my body’s exerting on the map, and makes a colored “map” of the pressure. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.
Hip Pain The Prime 4 is the clear winner in hip pain. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. Purple Rv Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids motion transfer results.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. This shows me that you are likely to feel movement on all three of these mattresses. This could make them less suitable for couples, especially if one is easily disturbed at night. Purple Rv Mattress
The best mattress to use for sex has enough bounce and motion control to be easy to move on.
Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.
However, if you’re not disturbed at night they can be good options for sex due to their lift-and mobility.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news for couples, who tend to overheat much more quickly than solo sleepers. Purple Rv Mattress
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Purple Rv Mattress
What are Purple Hybrids Made from?
Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This grid is the stretchy, purple top layer that gives the Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. There is only one difference: how many inches of Purple Grid each mattress uses.
Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Directly below the cover is where you’ll encounter the hyper-elastic polymer smart comfort grid. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This transition foam works to ease the sleeper down through the soft top grid and onto the sturdier pocketed coil system below.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. While the original Purple Hybrid is not as difficult to lift, it’s still worth having someone nearby to help you bag it. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses. The scent should disappear within a few hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
The Purple Hybrids are so cool! They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. It is especially effective when you opt for one of the thicker models. If you are willing to experiment with a more unique feel, I recommend the Purple. Purple Rv Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. Purple Hybrids will last longer due to the layers of innerspring coils. But heavier people may want to choose a different mattress. To increase the life expectancy of your Purple bed, make sure it is placed on a stable platform and not a box spring. Purple Rv Mattress

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s now take a deep dive into the Purple Hybrid Premier, and see how they compare with other mattresses you can find on the Internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
It does however have a more traditional feel to it than any Purple beds. So, this could work for those who aren’t keen on Purple’s unique feel.
In general, I’d recommend the Leesa Hybrid for back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.
Purples are a bit more bouncier that the Casper Hybrids. This is something combination sleepers may like.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 are a bit more pressure-relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Purple Rv Mattress
Purple Hybrids and Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer consists of high-density, poly foam rather than pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.
The Original Purple costs less than either Purple Hybrid Premier (or Purple Hybrid Premier).
