We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. While the specs are interesting, these beds do not sound comfortable. The Purple Mattress Commercial
These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?
Purple was established in 2015 and has grown to be one of the most well-known bedding brands. This is due to its cheeky advertising and innovative products. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers might like the Purple Premier 4 which provides great cushioning around sensitive pressure point.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
Combination sleepers will love the bounce of these beds! The Purple Mattress Commercial
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. The Purple Mattress Commercial
How Firm Are Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. It is important to remember that feeling can be subjective and depend on your body type. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
As you can see, all three of my mattresses felt very different to me.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. This mattress is quite firm. It’s obvious that this mattress is more supportive than the industry-standard 6.5 for mediumfirmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. This bed is recommended for combination sleepers who need to move around in the night. It also suits those who suffer from lower back pain and are looking for a mattress that can help with sciatica. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. But, I still didn’t feel “stuck-in” the bed. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These are the best combination mattresses on the market. The Purple Mattress Commercial
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers ” The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.
Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. The Purple Mattress Commercial
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers-The original Purple Hybrid should provide enough support to keep their spines straight. The Purple Mattress Commercial
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. The Purple Mattress Commercial
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. I use a pressure map to check for this.
Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. The gadget records the force of my body on the map and gives me a colored “map”. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. The map is blue across the board, but doesn’t gap around the lower back the way the Premier 3 and 4 maps do. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! These beds should be able to cushion the shoulders and relieve pressure.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. The Purple Mattress Commercial
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples
Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. This means that you will feel movement throughout the three mattresses. The Purple Mattress Commercial
The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.
This is great news, especially for couples that tend to overheat faster than solo sleepers. The Purple Mattress Commercial
Edge support is the ability to comfortably sleep on one side of the bed, while still feeling supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. The purple grid layer could compress under my weight, but I felt the foam and coils beneath it stay firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. The Purple Mattress Commercial
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. I know most people want to know more information about the Purple Grid layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. There is only one difference: how many inches of Purple Grid each mattress uses.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. It is difficult to describe how this polymer material feels. However, I would compare it to a waterbed because it wraps around your body as you move. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
The Purple Hybrids are all bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they actually come in bags instead of boxes! Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. They don’t have an overpowering off-gassing odor, which is a plus for these mattresses. Any scent should fade within a few days.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. Now it’s time to make a decision about whether one of these mattresses is the right choice for you. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
My favorite things about the Purple Hybrid mattresses
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap too much heat, so most people who are hot should feel comfortable on them. The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. These beds will be easy to adjust for combination sleepers.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. The Purple Grid is great for helping you maintain a healthy spine alignment. It also feels amazing in relieving pressure. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. The Purple Mattress Commercial
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
However, I would like to point out that some customers were unhappy with the original Purple mattress’s tendency of sagging or forming indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. The Purple Mattress Commercial

Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take an in-depth look at Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
But it is more traditional than any Purple bed, so it could work for those who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
The Leesa Hybrid is a good choice for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. The Purple Mattress Commercial
Purple Hybrids and Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer consists of high-density, poly foam rather than pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is firm, supportive, and bouncy. Combination sleepers may particularly enjoy this feeling.
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
